It is a subtropical plant of the Clusiaceae family, the part used is essentially the peel of the fruit which contains vitamins, carotenoids, flavonoids and hydroxycitric acid (HCA) capable of inhibiting the enzyme ATP citrate lyase, which is great importance in fat metabolism. This HCA is ‘able to eliminate excess fat in the body, blocks the synthesis of acetyl coenzyme A. This substance is able to reduce the synthesis of fatty acids by stimulating the sense of satiety’, consequently helping to decrease the sense of hunger and increasing the metabolism so as to lose weight naturally while maintaining a good mood. It also helps regulate the levels of cortisol, the so-called stress hormone. This important active ingredient HCA activates the oxidation for energy purposes of fatty acids in the liver, allowing the liver to synthesize glucose more effectively and build glycogen reserves, thus decreasing the sense of hunger and consequently food intake. Precisely because HCA decreases the transformation of sugars into fat, it has a specific action in regulating plasma levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.
