Beta – hydroxy – beta – methylbutyrate (HMB) is a metabolite of the amino acid leucine which, together with KIC (α-keto-isocaproate) and isovaleryl-CoA, they mediate the effects of leucine. A part of the dietary leucine (about 5%) is oxidized into HMB and the latter prevents the breakdown of muscle proteins much more effectively, giving the active ingredient the classic anti-catabolic action. Compared to leucine, HMB appears to be significantly more potent in “muscle mass preservation” but is less effective than leucine in inducing protein synthesis. Precisely for this reason, HMB is more marketed as an anti-catabolic agent rather than as an anabolic supporter (responsible for increasing muscle mass). What does it do?

A recent scientific study showed that athletes who took 3 grams of HMB per day for three weeks gained 3 times more muscle mass than others who they were only taking a placebo. The HMB’s ability to increase resistance alone is already an excellent achievement!

Scientific studies

In 2001 two Brazilian universities conducted a study on subjects with high cholesterol levels.
