Beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) is a metabolite of the amino acid leucine, which, together with KIC (α-keto-isocaproate) and isovaleryl-CoA, mediates the effects of leucine. A part of the alimentary leucine (about 5%) is oxidized in HMB and the latter prevents the breakdown of muscle proteins much more effectively, adding to the active principle its classic anti-catabolic effect. Compared to leucine, HMB appears to be significantly more powerful in “preserving muscle mass” but is less effective than leucine in inducing protein synthesis. Precisely for this reason, HMB is marketed more as an anti-catabolic agent rather than as an anabolic supporter (responsible for increasing muscle mass). HMB is also called a “specific supplement” designed to counteract muscle degeneration and works in athletes for whom muscle damage can be caused by sport, if not intentionally induced as in the case of bodybuilding.
