Carnitine is a non-essential amino acid present in greater quantities in muscle tissues, it is synthesized in the liver and kidneys starting from lysine and methionine.
Adequate levels of vitamins C and B6 are necessary for its synthesis. It has been demonstrated on several occasions that carnitine is very important in the fat metabolism and in the reduction of triglycerides.
When carnitine is taken in a dosage of 2/3 grams per day the oxidation of triglycerides is significantly facilitated.
Carnitine proves valuable in various morbid phenomena. Other pathologies, where the intake of carnitine has proved to be valuable, are some specific mitochondrial diseases with symptoms that affect the muscle.
The energetic function of carnitine depends on its ability to transport the activated fatty acids within the mitochondrion, where beta-oxidation takes place.
The use of carnitine also contributes to the saving of coenzyme a, which stimulates pyruvicodehydrogenase and alpha-ketoglutarate-dehydrogenase thus increasing the flow of metabolites in the krebs cycle. This mechanism could also explain the lower levels of lactate and pyruvate found after carnitine intake.

According to a study conducted at the Institute of Clinical Physiology of Pisa, subjects who had taken 3 grams of l-carnitine before training on the exercise bike managed to increase fat loss during training by almost 25%.
