Beta – hydroxy – beta – methylbutyrate (HMB) is a metabolite of the amino acid leucine which, together with KIC (\u03b1-keto-isocaproate) and isovaleryl-CoA, they mediate the effects of leucine. A part of the dietary leucine (about 5%) is oxidized into HMB and the latter prevents the breakdown of muscle proteins much more effectively, giving the active ingredient the classic anti-catabolic action.
