Glutamine is the most present amino acid in the body. It is a semi-essential amino acid: under normal circumstances the body is able to synthesize a sufficient amount but, in the event of increased needs, it is unable to meet the needs. L-glutamine plays a fundamental role in supporting the immune system: it maintains the functionality of the gastrointestinal system intact, and represents a substrate for the production of energy in enterocytes and lymphocytes, which is why it can be considered a fundamental nutrient for support of the immune system. At a muscle level, glutamine is one of the most present amino acids and its requirement increases with physical activity. Its role as a donor of nitrogen and carbon is important, necessary for the constitution of proteins and therefore for muscle maintenance.
