The importance of selenium in nutrition was studied starting in 1979, on the occasion of the discovery of Keshan’s disease, typical of areas of China and characterized by cardiovascular disorders (cardiomyopathies) in childhood and in women of childbearing age. The cause was related to the selenium deficiency in the soil of those areas. The importance of selenium in nutrition was then resumed in the following years by the WHO (World Health Organization- 1996).
Selenium is a trace mineral which, in small quantities, is essential for our body. Its main feature is that it is incorporated in the structure of some proteins, called seleno-proteins, first of all glutathione peroxidase, whose main function is to counteract the effect of free radicals, helping to prevent oxidative damage of cellular structures. especially at the expense of LDL cholesterol. Selenium is also important for the normal function of the thyroid, of the immune system, of male reproductive functions; contributes to the maintenance of hair and nails.
It has a synergistic effect with vitamin E.

How to use:
